When Boston College students moved into Williams Hall last fall, they probably weren’t concerned with the source of the hot water for showers or how the dorm complex was going to be heated. But facilities engineers at BC had been thinking about it for over a year.
They wanted to replace two oil fired steam boilers with three high efficiency dual fuel boilers capable of operating with natural gas or fuel oil back up. The existing boiler room was located in the basement of one of the dorms, requiring routing a new flue up an existing 60’ masonry chimney. Boston based BR+A consulting engineers, the MEP consultant on the project, approached Atlantic Air Products (AAP) regarding product selection specific to the boilers.
“The most significant challenge was the overdraft the system would realize under low fire scenarios,” said Skip Creamer, AAP. “We suggested incorporating Schebler’s Sequence Draft Control system into the design. Schebler’s design group worked directly with BR+A’s engineers in an effort to streamline the process, resulting in a chimney system layout and specification which met the project’s operational requirements.”
AAP secured the order with the HVAC contractor and provided on-site field measurements and installation training for the sheet metal workers. They suggested assembling the top 55’ section of the vertical stack on the ground in the parking lot and installing it in one piece.
“Saving time and cost on installations is an important aspect of our value added approach to the chimney market. Our customers tend to be less focused on upfront material costs when we can demonstrate a net saving on an installed system.”
Schebler provided start up services on the SDC system which allowed AAP to have a presence during the commissioning phase with the contractor, engineer and owner. Creamer is certain this successful high profile project will lead to future opportunities in the area.
