Why Schools and Universities Need the Certainty of Schebler

Nearly 57.5 million U.S. students and employees walk the halls of learning every school day. While much attention is given to their use of school technology and security, one critical system is often overlooked: the chimney and venting system for the schools’ boiler exhaust.

The Challenges

Safe and efficient venting solutions play a vital role in schools, protecting occupant health, ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting long-term operational efficiency. These factors are more pronounced in schools for many reasons. For one, more schools are turning to energy-efficient appliances to reduce utility costs, but these appliances often require specialized venting. School boiler rooms are often located near congested areas, including classrooms, halls and administrative areas. Schools may also have challenging layouts, with crowded utility spaces and cramped structures that may make venting and pipe routing difficult. Because of a school’s size, they likely have multiple boilers — five or more is not uncommon — that need attention. Finally, clean air has been proven vital to learning; children are often more sensitive to indoor contaminants.

Unfortunately, installing new venting systems or replacing older ones is not always simple due to a school’s constrained budgets and limited downtime (projects must be started and completed under tight summer deadlines). These make choosing the right manufacturer and the best products critical.

The Challenges of Safe and Efficient Venting

Student and staff safety must always be a top priority. Effective chimney systems are engineered to support safe combustion and exhaust removal, reducing the risk of flue gas spillage, carbon monoxide exposure and corrosion-related failures. Due to these venting systems’ proximity to school occupants, even a small leak can be a big problem.

These systems are regulated through a layered framework of federal safety rules and state/local adoption and enforcement. Inspectors typically apply stricter standards to schools due to their high occupancy.Governing bodies that regulate these systems include:

  • The EPA, which sets emissions limits and clean air requirements
  • The International Building Code (IBC), which classifies schools as Group E occupancies, a classification with specific, stricter fire safety rules
  • OSHA, which requires the prevention of hazardous atmospheres and the proper ventilation of combustion appliances
  • State and local municipalities, which may have their own unique requirements

The Importance of Clean Air

According to estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, half of adults and children who spend their days in schools breathe air polluted with toxic chemicals, mold, viruses, bacteria, asbestos, pesticides, smog and more. The impacts are well studied and numerous. Research shows that poor air quality may:or air quality can:

  • Reduce attention span and concentration
  • Impair decision-making and problem-solving
  • Increase fatigue and headaches
  • Spread germs and bacteria, increasing nurse visits and sick days
  • Trigger asthma or respiratory irritation, particularly in children

Choosing Between Condensing and Non-Condensing Boilers

Venting systems depend on whether a school chooses a condensing or non-condensing boiler application. Which system is best for each school depends on the school’s existing situation, budget and preference.

Condensing boiler systems

These systems use two heat exchangers, one to extract heat from hot combustion gases and another to recover extra heat by condensing exhaust water vapor. They are highly efficient, resulting in lower energy bills and lower carbon emissions. However, upfront costs are significantly higher, and these systems require a condensate drain for the acidic water that develops.

Schebler’s corrosion-resistant, stainless steel solutions are the perfect complement for these systems; Schebler’s non-corrosive exhaust systems are built to handle acidic condensate safely and efficiently.

Non-condensing boiler systems

These high-temperature-rated chimney systems use only one heat exchanger, so they don’t recover latent heat. As a result, they are less efficient than condensing boiler systems, although they are less costly up front and easier to install. These options are best for short-term solutions or when the school faces budget constraints.

Schebler is well-acquainted with low-cost, high-value venting for non-condensing boilers. Schebler can ensure that venting is properly sized (improper vent sizing is a common problem), efficient and budget-friendly.

The Schebler Education Advantage

When safe and efficient ventilation is needed in schools or any industry, Schebler Chimney Systems has the solution.  As the leader in prefabricated commercial chimney and exhaust systems manufacturing, Schebler Chimney Systems designs systems that are proven, safe and efficient. In fact, Schebler has been creating secure and long-lasting systems for nearly 130 years.

As experts in the field, Schebler can determine the best venting for any school system. For example, we recently worked with 16 Chicago schools. We were provided rough napkin sketches of what the school was looking to achieve, and we transformed them into professional drawings that detailed exactly what they needed, including a plan for how to achieve it. As a result, when the schools opened the following Fall, each school had a new system in place, on time and on budget.

At Schebler, our advanced venting systems are designed to meet the unique demands of educational facilities, prioritizing dependability, efficiency and durability. Schebler systems also improve safety, provide cleaner air and deliver many advantages, including:

  • UL listed fire and leakproof certainty
  • Streamlined installation
  • Long-term reliability
  • Custom solutions to fit constrained areas
  • Fast quoting and response times
  • Budget-conscious solutions
  • Compliant with strict building codes
  • We go above and beyond, such as performing flow and draft calculations to ensure efficiency and compliance

We can provide each of those benefits for your school or building system as well — fast, efficiently and within your budget. Contact us today to get more information about our chimney solutions.
