WHY STADIUMS AND ARENAS NEED THE CERTAINTY OF SCHEBLER

Stadiums and arenas come alive on event days, when thousands of fans, employees, contractors, performers, vendors and broadcast teams move through the large, complex facility. Behind the scenes, commercial kitchens operate at peak capacity, HVAC and boiler systems maintain comfort across massive spaces, and backup power systems are ready to protect operations in the event of an unexpected outage. For stadium owners, arena operators, engineers and contractors, the stakes are high, and the exhaust and venting infrastructure supporting those systems is a critical and often underestimated part of what keeps the venue running safely.

WHY EXHAUST SYSTEMS MATTER IN STADIUMS AND ARENAS

A stadium or arena is not a single-use facility. It is a collection of specialized environments operating together. Concession stands, full-service kitchens, premium clubs, team dining areas, mechanical rooms, generator rooms and rooftop systems all place different demands on exhaust design.

The challenge is not only the volume of exhaust needing to be managed, but also the building’s complexity. Large venues often include long duct runs, crowded overhead spaces, structural steel, multiple roof elevations, occupied corridors and limited chase space. Exhaust systems must be routed through those constraints without compromising fire safety, serviceability or performance.

That is why chimney and exhaust systems need to be considered as part of the venue’s overall risk profile. They help support the safe movement of heat and combustion byproducts out of the building, help keep grease exhaust systems maintainable, and ensure equipment can operate as intended during peak demand.

FOOD SERVICE OPERATIONS CREATE REAL FIRE AND MAINTENANCE RISKS

In modern stadiums and arenas, food service is nearly as important as the entertainment. Concession stands, restaurants, catering kitchens and suite-level service areas often rely on cooking equipment that produces heat, smoke and grease-laden vapors.

Those risks are well recognized in commercial cooking standards. NFPA 96 provides fire safety requirements intended to reduce fire hazards in public and private commercial cooking operations.

The risk is significant, although it cannot be attributed solely to venting. According to U.S. Fire Administration data, there were an estimated 33,300 nonresidential building cooking fires in 2023, resulting in $50.3 million in dollar loss. In stadiums and arenas, where cooking operations may be spread across multiple levels and high-traffic areas, exhaust design, grease duct access, clearances and maintenance considerations become critical parts of the overall fire safety strategy.

BACKUP GENERATORS BRING THEIR OWN EXHAUST CHALLENGES

Stadiums and arenas depend on emergency and standby power systems to help support critical operations during an outage, including lighting, communications, security systems, refrigeration and other essential facility functions. In many facilities, backup power is supplied by fuel-fired generators.

Those generators do more than produce electricity. They also produce hot combustion exhaust that must be routed safely out of the building. Generator exhaust systems must be designed to handle high temperatures, pressure, vibration, thermal expansion and more, especially in large venues where exhaust routes may pass through or near occupied areas, service corridors, roof structures and mechanical spaces.

AIR QUALITY PROBLEMS CAN ESCALATE QUICKLY IN ENCLOSED ARENAS

Not every stadium or arena exhaust concern is tied to cooking or generators. Enclosed arenas can also face indoor air quality risks when combustion sources, ventilation and exhaust removal are not properly managed.

For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that inadequate ventilation can raise indoor pollutant levels inside a building, either by failing to expel them sufficiently or by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute them.

Combustion exhaust also poses a carbon monoxide risk if not properly managed. A 2025 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission staff report characterized the carbon monoxide poisoning hazard associated with stationary generators. It recommended measures to minimize the risk of exhaust infiltration into occupied structures. For large venues, this reinforces the importance of generator exhaust systems engineered for the application, appropriately routed and coordinated with the building’s openings, air intakes, occupied spaces and code requirements.

A CDC investigation illustrates how serious those conditions can become. In a 2014 indoor ice arena incident in Wisconsin, elevated carbon monoxide levels were detected throughout the facility. As a result, 92 people sought emergency department evaluation, and 74 met the case definition for carbon monoxide poisoning. The CDC noted that CO poisonings at ice arenas can be prevented through regular maintenance, CO detectors, and adequate ventilation. This is true for all arenas.

HIGH-EFFICIENCY MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT NEEDS THE RIGHT VENTING APPROACH

Large venues often use boilers, water heaters and other mechanical equipment that must be vented in accordance with the appliance type and operating conditions. When high-efficiency appliances are used, they have different exhaust demands than conventional equipment, including lower flue gas temperatures, condensate, corrosion concerns and positive, neutral or negative draft requirements.

UL 1738 covers venting systems for gas-burning appliances in Categories II, III and IV, which are commonly associated with reduced flue gas temperatures. UL 103 applies to factory-built chimneys for residential-type and building heating appliances. These standards are relevant because exhaust systems must be selected and engineered for the equipment they serve, rather than treated as interchangeable components.
